- Attachments
- Permanent things attached to your teeth.
- Tooth colored, but not invisible.
- Not everyone needs them, but it seems like many patients do.
- Big deal for me since I wanted the option to not have anything on my teeth if I needed/wanted to.
- You can look at my attachments with trays on and off by clicking here.
- Interproximal Reduction and Tooth Removal
- Got crowding? Taking your wisdom teeth out isn't always enough.
- You might need teeth shaving to make room for your teeth to line up. This is if you're lucky.
- If you have major crowing your dentist might even want to pull some of your teeth to make room.
- Wanna know how this works? Click here.
- "Drooling" and Spit
- It's hard to close your mouth all the way and there's saliva in there.
- You aren't supposed to bite down on your trays.
- When you take your trays in and out, they're gonna be covered in saliva.
- Water and stuff gets stuck under the trays. You can see it here.
- Jaw Tension
- Whatever crazy way you're holding you mouth because you can't settle comfortably into your normal bite can cause your jaw muscle to tighten up.
- If it does tense up, you could have some lock jaw type symptoms and major popping.
- Be prepared to massage the jaw muscle
- Chapped Lips/ Dry Mouth
- Your saliva gets stuck in the trays constantly which means it's not there to lubricate your mouth and lips.
- No snacking
- Ok, so not no snacking, but lots less snacking. You're gonna get excited about a cheese wedge or little nibble of something and then realize, no eating with your trays in. :(
- You wear the trays all the time when you're not eating. They aren't like retainers, you don't just wear them at night.
- Your bite will be weird and Hard foods might not be good for your progress:
- Your teeth aren't gonna necessarily match up into a perfect bite when they start to shift.
- Chewing with a non-matching bite can be weird and you want to be careful. You'll need your teeth to stay in that weird bite so the trays go back on.
- The tendency for your teeth will be to slide back into your normal bite, especially if you're eating something hard to chew or if you leave your trays out for a long time.
- You'll want to be careful not to eat things like jerky and super crunchy things.

Invisalign's Dirty Secrets
I asked tons of questions before considering a treatment plan. I knew there were things I didn't know. But...I wished someone had told me about these aspects before I dove in.

I am in my first week of treatment and few times I felt my jaw lock. That doesn't usually happen so i google it. Glad I found your blog! Very informative! Makes me kind of antsy and worried about the continuing problem of lock jaw. Not looking forward to the pain and discomfort! I will just let the locking of jaw be.
ReplyDeleteYou start to get used to it. I've determined that's it's related to the tension caused on the teeth by the trays. Having them out for bit (which we're not supposed to do!) can help ease the tension. You can find more information about my experience with lockjaw post here >> http://nobraces.blogspot.com/2012/08/oh-lockjaw.html . Glad to hear this was helpful.

DeleteVery helpful advice. I'm on my 2nd day and want to do everything correctly to get the best results.
ReplyDeleteSuper useful reading your blog! Do you have any advice to help with a dry mouth? I feel like I'm constantly drinking water. Basically if I'm not drinking water, my mouth is dry. I'm only in the first week of my first tray so I'm hoping this will get better once I get used to it?
ReplyDeletemy lips feel furry with my invisalign - very weird. does this happen to everyone? I am a trumpet player and this furriness of the lips makes it impossible to play with it in. not ideal! it's kinda just where the lips meet just inside. And dry tongue too. Does this go away or have I got 6 months of weird lips ahead! on the plus side my teeth appear to be whitening themselves? very weird nice side effect!
ReplyDeleteIm almost on my 2nd week of invaslign. I think it is causing the skin around the corners of my mouth to be dry. I guess because I can't technically close my mouth all the way, that maybe at night saliva is leaking out of the sides of my mouth. I've been putting antibotic cream and Aquaphor around and on my lips for the past two nights. But do you guys have any suggestions on what else I can possibly use to calm the irritation and redness by the corners of my mouth?
ReplyDeleteAquaphor Lip Repair is the best thing to help with lip dryness.. However, you should make sure you are cleaning your trays with a soak-style cleaner at least once. AND be sure you are brushing them well. I'd also suggest using mouthwash so your know that any irritated skin doesn't have germs coming from your trays or mouth. The cleaner the better. You can also try Vaniply ointment on the skin to keep it moisturized while it heals.
